OPERADELAWARE Hosts its 11th Annual Music! Words! Opera Workshop!

Wilmington – Reports have shown that exposure to and participation in the arts help students develop critical thinking and problem solving skills. To help teachers who have musical training, and those who don’t, OPERADELAWARE announces a free workshop beginning July 31 through August 4, 2000 at the OPERADELAWARE Studios on 4 South Poplar Street on the Riverfront.

Music!Words!Opera! is a workshop developed and taught by national trainers, Chris Forbes and Clifford Brooks. Since opera encompasses every art form, the workshop provides the foundation to expand arts-in-education programming in the school system. The workshop focuses on literature, music, theater, and social sciences.

Designed for use with grades 7-12, the Level III workshop introduces two instructional approaches:
- "Great Works" offers an in-depth comparison of Verdi’s Opera Otello, and Shakespeare’s play Othello.
- "Create, Develop, and Produce" allows teachers to involve themselves in the creative process of writing an opera or musical.

All participants receive a free teacher’s manual that includes a compact disc set with complete recordings of Verdi’s Otello and Shakespeare’s Othello. The teacher’s manual has also been annotated to link lesson plans to Delaware’s Education Standards. In-service and graduate credits are available.

Registration for the Music! Words! Opera! Workshop can be completed by calling Valerie Macneir, Education Coordinator for OPERADELAWARE at (302) 658-8063.

OPERADELAWARE programs are funded in part by the Delaware Division of the Arts, a state agency committed to supporting the arts in Delaware.
